<itunes:summary>Hi. I am Robin Fisher. I read a lot.
And a fair chunk of what I read is comic books. I love to talk about comic books and have an enthusiasm that is hard to deny. I am a comic book activist and this is my show.

My mission in life is to brainwash every man, woman and child into realizing that comics are more than just juvenile pabulum. When done right they can be an amazing amalgam of art and literature. Comics can make you laugh, cry, think and feel just as much as your favorite movie or book.. While looking visually stunning at the same time. It’s my favourite medium. I know, there are comics out there for everyone, but they are hard to find. Let me be your guide. I’ll be your cartoon gal.

For the past 10 years I’ve been living, eating, sleeping and breathing comics. From writing comic

stories, to editing fund-raising anthologies. I’ve worked in comic book stores, I’ve written for The Comics Journal. I’ve attended comic conventions all along the West Coast and interviewed many.

But now, now it’s a whole new ballgame. New station, new day, new time slot and a whole wide world of Band Dessine to discover. I can’t wait. Montreal is a thriving hum of comic activity. Every week there is something incredible and comic related happening. There’s so much to learn and so much to share. I plan on exploring all avenues of the art form. Whether it be cartoons, action figures, fashion illustration, poster art, movies, music, anything and everything to do with the graphic arts, it shall be covered.

Musically I’ll be playing some new and neat stuff (Bat for Lashes and The Heavy) but I’ll be playing the oldies and goodies too. (Drop Nineteens, The Mills Brothers, Astrud Gilberto and Mike Ladd) The show will be bursting at the seams with variety.

So welcome. Welcome to The Onomatopoeia Show. Blowing your mind, one comic book at a time.

So besides loving comics beyond all belief, I also have a secret passion for fashion. (Again, I completely blame the evil brainwashing of 'Jem and the Holograms.' "Glamour and glitter, fashion and fame!") This includes a 1940's Singer sewing machine, a tower of fabric that reaches to the top of my ceiling, every notion you could possibly think of or need, boxes and boxes of patterns and hours upon hours of fashion television.

Here's what I like about the world of fashion illustration, there is rarely a bad apple in the bunch. The artists may not be to your taste, but the art is always of the highest caliber, if not interestingly experimental.

ERTE
http://www.erte.com/ (http://www.erte.com/)

The first taste I had of fashion illustration was Erte. Renowned the world over, he really was the best place to start. Born in the late 1800's in Russia, he moved to Paris to start a career in design. After receiving a commission from "Harpers Bazaar' in 1915, Erte continued to rise to great prominence during the 20's and 30's as a prolific and intricate fashion designer, illustrator, set designer and costumer. Forgotten by the 40's, it was an art dealers determination that got Erte noticed again in the late 60's, to an even wider audience, with an even greater appreciation. His attention to detail is sublime. I think his designs are extremely creative, to the extent of attempting to create my own Erte inspired piece. I also find him to be a master in colour composition. His scenes are intense and stunning, and not without humour.
Erte: the fashion designer/illustrator

GEORGE BARBIER
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Barbier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Barbier)

My exposure to George Barbier was a collection of his postcards found in a quaint little shop in Niagara on the Lake. (It's where the 'rents live.) Barbier was born in 1882 in France. He came to national attention when he mounted his own exhibit in 1911. What I enjoy of Barbiers work is the innovative way he has to showcase fashion, as well as his attention to detail in regards to background. I'm also partial to his palate. Lastly there is always a story going on in the wings, due to his clever set up of characters and scenes.

The whole romance comic genre blows my mind. Think of it, it's a whole style of comic that is written by men, illustrated by men, for women, about love and relationships. As well, they're from the past, which makes their plots and conclusions even more inadvertently ridiculous. The absurdity is so much fun! Sometimes, especially at DC, there are excellent and innovative artists and that's always a treat. I've been collecting for 12 years and I literally get an incredible high every time I buy a vintage romance comic. I love the colours, the styles, the hair, the stories, the characters, I love it all. I honestly feel that each comic represents a part of womens history, from a male perspective, in the comic world. It was hard to narrow down my collection, so I focused on a specific publisher, DC comics (http://www.dccomics.com/dccomics/). Of the two main publishers, Marvel and DC, DC is the less schlocky.

Young Romance #1 (vol. 1): 1947 - 1963 (vol. 2) 1963 - 1975
Published by Crestwood then sold to DC in the 60's. 'Young Romance' was created by Joe Simon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Simon) and Jack Kirby (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Kirby). The art was a real departure from the bombastic psychedelia of Kirby's later Marvel superhero art. Extremely dated and totally hilarious the last story, 'The Plight of the Suspicious Bridegroom' channels a weird EC vibe.

Some of the more bizarre covers.

Notice the old lady's death grip, and her daughters sleepy pose!

Girl's Love #75 - 1960
(http://www.cartoongal.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/heretostay1-240x315.jpg)

Here to Stay
After getting dumped by Ronnie, our girl buries herself in her work to forget about love. Just read it okay? No really, the ending is the best.

When Tomorrow Comes
Weird war memory involving an old wives tale results in a weak, wayward man. Told from the mans point of view, the whole thing leaves me scratching my head.

Strangest advice column
So I'm guessing these columns started in the late 60's. I say guess because I can find no information on these guys and unfortunately I don't have every romance comic in existence. The first one I saw was Marc and his advice shtick is to be a chauvinistic jerk. Later on I was introduced to Paul, apparently he's Marc's brother. Though I think hes the same guy with a mustache. Paul's deal is he's nice.

My favourite artists
Elizabeth Berube
I can barely find any information on her. She's considered the last woman to work for DC Romance comics. She started with them in the early 70's and I adore her style. When I get a romance comic with her art in it, it's a total jackpot.
